Although I was born and raised in the South and continue to live here today, I have had the honor and the privilege of living and working all over the country and abroad. I have also been blessed to travel this great world of ours for pure pleasure and it is through all these endeavors that I find myself continually drawn to the words of Mary Anne.
The South is not merely a geographical location, but it is a way of life, a state of mind, a permeation of one's moral fiber. The South that I know and love is not filled with hatred, rather it is filled with love, hope, graciousness and gracefulness. The South is in me and I am in the South.
Having said this, the first time that I watched the moon rise over the ocean, on the other side of the world, I was touched in a way that words cannot explain. The beauty was overwhelming and it made me realize just how small I really am.
It also made me realize that as much as people are different, we are just as much the same. We may have different core beliefs, different thoughts and different cultures, but at the core of it all, we are human beings. We have identical basic needs; love, acceptance and compassion to name but just a few.
This realization had such a profound effect on me that I knew I would never be the same from that moment on. I will always be a Southern girl, and all that this implies. However, my mind and heart were opened that night, when I watched the moon rise into the dark sky and I felt at one with all the world.
